Genetically modified
organisms... how they came into our food supply and the risks
they pose to animal and human health. Very interesting is how this relates to the growing food allergy problems that so many kids seem to have now.
"This seminal documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain
the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and
offers a recipe for protecting ourselves and our future."

Although this short animation speak directly about the UK, it can easily describe any other western "developed" society.

"Economic growth means you have to find something that was once nature and make it into a good, or was once a gift relationship and make it into a service. You have to find something that people once got for free or did for themselves or for each other, and then take it away and sell it back to them, somehow."
"We didn't earn any of the things that really keep us alive, or that make life good. We didn't earn the air. We didn't earn being born... We didn't earn having a planet that can provide food. We didn't earn the sun... on some level, people have this inborn gratitude because, on some level we know that we didn't earn any of this, we know that life is a gift. Well if you know that you've received a gift, then the natural response is gratitude, the desire to give in turn."
"...the old world falls apart, and a new world is born. A child plays and develops his or her gifts, but doesn't apply them to their true purpose yet, and that's what humanity has been doing. We've been messing around, playing with our gifts of technology and culture and developing these gifts. Now we are coming into adulthood and it's time to apply them to our true purpose."
"Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies
to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to
alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and
necessitated endless growth.
Today, these trends have reached
their extreme - but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great
opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and
sustainable way of being."
Listening to this just makes us happy... another great performance brought to us by the folks at Playing For Change.
"The PFC crew is here in Congo recording new songs around the world. On
our second day of filming we met this group of amazing musicians in
Kinshasa and within minutes they where playing us some songs and sharing
their stories. Today's video is a song titled "Toyeba Yo."
The
TP OK Jazz Band in Kinshasa keep the memory of the Immortal Congolese
Guitar player, Franco, alive and well. These musicians truly represent
the soul of Congo and they teach us that even in terrible circumstances
the artist and the musician must rise up to bring joy and hope to all
those who will listen."
A new video release from the folks at Playing For Change... love!!! Enjoy!
"Today we are proud to release a new video for our PFC Live Outside

everyone you meet!!"

"Today we are proud to share a new video for our 'Live Outside' series,
featuring Louis Mhlanga. 'Maria' was recorded and filmed in Louis' back
yard in South Africa. Sometimes great music is just in the moment, and
today we celebrate these moments together through music."
We've been watching this video over and over again. The voice on this young man is amazing...and the friendship between the two teens even more beautiful.
"Chocolate's Child Slaves" - The CNN Freedom Project
Early last year, CNN started a project that takes a hard look into the reality of slavery in today's world. The CNN Freedom Project: Ending Modern-Day Slavery investigates all types of human trafficking occurring around the world from the sex trade to forced labor. Most recently, it has turned its focus on the issue of child slavery in the cocoa industry. Their recent documentary, "Chocolate's Child Slaves" aired this past Friday, Jan 20th. Below are some clips as well as other CNN videos relating to the topic...
This interview is in 2 parts. The interview is a bit long with some science speak... however, this is so important for us to understand. Let's just say, that when we screw with our food system, we screw with our own health.

"In the summer of 2011 the Playing For Change Band was invited to perform at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. While we were in town long-time friend of the project, Jimmy Buffett, invited us to a jam session on the roof of Margaritaville that rocked into the wee hours of the morning. The PFC Band kicked off the night with this tribute to the people of Japan who have been a affected by this past spring's Tsunami."
This may be one of our new favorites from the Playing For Change folks... beautiful!
"7 Billion People | 7 Billion Actions | 7billionactions.org - By the end of 2011 the world will have reached 7 billion people. The United Nations Population Fund is leading an innovative global campaign to bring awareness to the opportunities and challenges that this milestone presents. But 7 Billion people means 7 Billion hearts. Music has always been the best way to speak to the hearts of the people. Playing for Change has partnered with the United Nations to present an original song around the world to serve as an anthem for such an important time, "United".
We traveled across the globe, put headphones on musicians, added them to the track, and created a video that can serve as a tangible example of something positive we can all do together as a human race.
Lets inspire each other. Lets everybody get involved and join us on in this journey, so that together we leave this world better than we found it. To learn more about how to be part of the "United" track go to http://7BillionActions.org."
From the Playing for Change folks... As always, just beautiful!

Fair Trade USA recently released a series of micro-documentaries that help bring a better understanding of what Fair Trade is all about and how it helps both people and environment. Take a look...
Fair Trade: Quality Products
"Fair Trade Certified products are some of the highest quality goods available on the market. Farming communities around the world are rapidly realizing that quality-not quantity- is directly related to profitability; leading many Fair Trade cooperatives to invest their premium funds in quality control initiatives. By strengthening their capacity to produce high quality goods these farmers are gaining increased market access, strengthening their business capacity and in turn earning higher wages to support the well being of their families and communities."
Fair Trade: Improving Lives
"Through Fair Trade certification not only do farmers earn a higher price for their goods, they also receive an additional premium fund for community development projects. These funds are used for things like building schools, health care clinics and clean water wells, as well as for home loans, scholarships and transportation. Fair Trade empowers communities to take their futures into their own hands."
Fair Trade: Protecting the Environment
"Fair Trade is not just about earning a higher price for the harvest, it's about learning techniques for sustainable agriculture that help protect the environment and make the world a better place for future generations. To become Fair Trade Certified, farms must adhere to a strict set of environmental standards, including but not limited to: no use of GMO's, minimal and safe use of chemicals, elimination of slash and burn techniques and responsible disposal of waste and water runoff. These standards not only ensure sustainable production practices, but also worker health and safety.
Additionally, while Fair Trade does not require organic certification, it does encourage organic conversion to further enhance environmental commitment."
Fair Trade: Power of the Consumer
"Fair Trade is a system that harnesses the power of the market to help alleviate poverty and generate significant global change; this is why the American consumer has so much power. By making small, simple changes to your everyday purchasing habits, such as choosing a cup of Fair Trade coffee or eating a Fair Trade banana, shoppers are able to vote with their dollar for a better world."
You're invited to join our 1st annual Playing For Change Day on September 17, 2011 - a global day of action where musicians will perform on stages, cafés, city squares, and street corners worldwide to raise money to support music in the lives of young people.
You can create an event on that day - OR you can find our about PFC Day events in your community - by signing up at PlayingForChangeDay.org. Whether you're performing yourself, or heading out to see another artist perform, everyone's participation is needed to make September 17th a day to remember.
This year's event carries the theme Power To The People, drawing its inspiration from John Lennon's activism, thanks to the gracious support of Theatre Within and Yoko Ono who believe in our mission and recognize it as one manifestation of John's vision for the role of music in creating a better world.
Proceeds raised will go to support the work of the Playing For Change Foundation and Theatre Within to help build music schools, strengthen music and arts education, support teachers and performances, purchase instruments, and connect young people to promote cross cultural learning and conflict resolution.
You understand the power of music and the ways it can change the human heart and the human experience. Will you bring your passion and presence to a global day of music? Please visit PlayingForChangeDay.org to learn more and to participate."
